Auto Battery Chargers > 12V auto battery charger

12V Auto Battery Chargers are no longer the big clunkers of the past

In years past the 12V auto battery charger could be expected to take up a sizeable amount of space. These older units were made up of steel housings and bulky analog electronic components keeping weight and size considerably large. Mostly found on roll around carts, automotive chargers could be also found on workbenches. The workbench models were not nearly as portable as the roll around cart due to their size and weight.

As technology improved and manufacturing costs came down improvements were found in car chargers. With the changes came lighter weight materials and smaller digital electronics. These improvements meant more power from smaller units therefore allowing 12 volt chargers small enough to fit in a glove box.

More applications of 12V batteries has meant greater need for easy upkeep, rejuvenation, and emergency charging or boosting. Whether it be sealed lead acid, gel cell, or AGM batteries they most likely all will need a boost or charge at some point. Owners of seasonal vehicles such as a RV, boat, or motorcycle need to ensure their batteries are ready to start when they are.

A full featured automotive battery charger is not for everyone. Car owners who do not own recreational vehicles will not have a need for battery tenders or trickle chargers. A more appropriate and economical solution might be an emergency booster or charger ready for the occasional dead battery.

When shopping for a 12 volt auto battery charger be careful not to buy more than you need. Keep in mind what your ultimate needs are. Are you a one car owner with no outdoor toys or do you own multiple road, dirt or marine vehicles that sit for weeks at a time? Regardless of what you own and use you can be assured that at some point in time you will need the use of a battery charger.
